Rivers Assembly Lashes Out  At Activities Of Mechanics…Charges Relevant Authorities

By Ngozi Anosike

The Rivers State lawmakers have frowned at the way and manner most of the major roads in Rivers State have been converted to mechanic workshops.

This was sequel to the motion presented by Hon Golden Ngozi Chioma (Etche) during its plenary session.

According to him, most of the major roads as well as areas designated as motor parks have been ravaged by mechanics, as mechanic workshops are scattered in undeveloped properties in most streets of the state capital.

He regretted that the various bodies saddled with the maintenance of order on our roads have fallen short of their responsibilities and prayed the House to among other things direct the Rivers State Environmental to within one month rid all the roads and parts in Port Harcourt metropolis of mechanic workshops.

In their various speeches, the lawmakera supported the motion and opined that a particular place be assigned to them for their activities.

They also noted with dismay that the road decongestion committee, Rivers State Environmental Sanitation Authority and Timariv  have failed in their responsibilities of ensuring that roads are rid of rickety vehicles, as what they do instead is to jump at any vehicle that suddenly breaks down on the road in order to collect money from the owner.

In his ruling, the Speaker, Rt Hon Otelemaba Amachree stated that something has to be done in order to stop the nuisance caused by the conversion of the roads to mechanic workshops and ruled that the Controller General of TIMARIV, Commissioner For Transport, Chairman of Rivers State Environmental Sanitation Authority, chairmen of Port Harcourt, Obio/Akpor, Oyigbo and Eleme Local Government Councils be invited to the House for a meeting in order to discuss how best to address the menace.

Meanwhile, the House has also received the interim report of investigation from the adhoc committee on discriminatory employment practices and environmental pollution by companies operating in Rivers State.

Presenting the report, the chairman of the committee, Hon Chidi Julius Lloyd (Emohua) recommended among other things, that the Rivers State Employment Law, 2000 be either reviewed or repealed.

The debate on the report was deferred to enable members go through it in order to be able to make inputs.###
