Removal Of Subsidy: Clergy, Others Call On FG To Revive
Refineries
By Amadi Gilbert
The Bishop of Umuahia, His Lordship, Luscius Iweoro Ugorji has
called on the Federal Government under the leadership of Dr
Jonathan Goodluck to revive the refineries so as to help
alleviate poverty.
Addressing airport correspondents at the Port Harcourt
International Airport, Omagwa Rivers State recently, Iwejoro
said, the issue of subsidy removal was not wrong since the
government considered what the masses would benefit.
According to His Lordship, Government had reasons in the steps
and policy it has taken but stressed that the issue was that
about 73% of the people are already pushed to the wall, adding
that, any other hardship on them might mean death.
He maintained that the Federal Government needed to put in place
some basic infrastructure saying it was the reason for removing
the subsidy.
Speaking Dr. Reuben Jaja, member of the Niger Delta science and
Technology park and an elder statesman in Rivers State said the
subsidy is a very difficult issue given the fact that the
country spends about N1.3 trillion to subsidize fuel.
According to Dr Jaja “putting such into consideration, it is
time for Nigerians allow the subsidy go”, stressing that the
country is pilling up debts that if not paid would affect the
generation unborn”.###
