Employment of Health Workers:

Med. Lab. Scientists Decry Exclusion of Members

The association of medical laboratory scientists in Rivers State have decried the current outright and conspicuous omission of their members, technicians, assistants/ optometrists in the last employment of health workers in the hospital management board.The chairman of the association, Dr Chris Ugo Mbata made the condemnation during the opening ceremony of the association's “2012 BIOMEDICAL WEEK”.According to him, the practice of medical Laboratory Science in Rivers State is not what and where it

should be regretting that there is no Directorate of Medical Laboratory Services as stated in the extant scheme of service in the state Ministry of Health, Hospitals Management Board and Primary Health Care Board despite the fact that there are about 5 substantive directors on grade level 16 who according to him are without portfolios.

The state boss of Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, also pleaded with Gov. Amaechi to enhance the practice of the profession as applicable to medical doctors and reminded him that the inauguration of board of hospitals management board is long overdue.

He however appreciated Gov. Amaechi for employing about 42 Medical Laboratory Scientists to head the labouratories in the Primary Health Care Centres across the State, adding that more scientists are needed in the remaining health care centres.

Dr. Mbata further disclosed that the profession which is regulated by Medical Laboratory Scientists Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) is aimed at sanitizing and restoring confidence of the clinician and public in the quality of laboratory test results and called for the use of professionals.

In her address, the chairman of the 2012 BIOMEDICAL WEEK planning committee, Obi-Thomas Jane N. hinted that the weeklong celebration which has “lassa fever and public Health: the role of Medical Laboratory Scientists in Definitive Diagnosis” as its theme, hinted that the essence of the programme was to create the much needed awareness on lassa fever and educate the public on critical health issues that would impact positively on their health status.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the chairman of the occasion, Sir Isaiah Choko advised the association to be committed to their profession whether in the private or public practice and warned them against being carried away by the monetary gains they make at the detriment of their patients.###
