Jonathan Nominates Justice Mukhtar As First  Female Chief Justice Of Nigeria

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has nominated Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar as the New Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN); making her the first female to occupy the office. In a letter to the Senate, Jonathan urged senators to approve her appointment.

Justice Mukhtar, 68, succeeds outgoing CJN, Justice Dahiru Musdapher who retires from service on the 16th of this month.

In the letter addressed to the Senate President, Senator David Mark and read at today's plenary, Jonathan said "her nomination is in conformity with section 231 sub-section (1) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The letter reads in part: "In conformity with section 231 sub-section (1) of the 1999 9onstitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended which gives the president powers to appoint a Chief Justice of Nigeria, acting on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council and subject to confirmation of the appointment by the Senate, I have the honour to forward the nomination of Honourable Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, CON, CFR for confirmation as Chief Justice of Nigeria.

"It is my hope that this request will receive the usual expeditious attention of the Distinguished Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria."

In the same vein, President Jonathan, also forwarded to the Senate the nominations of Hon. Justices, Kumai Bayang Akaahs (North West Zone) and Stanley Shenko Alagoa (South South Zone) as Justices of the Court of Appeal.

In a letter also read by Senator Mark, he said both "Appointments have been necessitated by the impending retirement from service of Hon. Justice Dahiru Musdapher, Chief Justice of Nigeria, and Hon. Justice F. F. Tabai."

He said the nominations are "In conformity with Section 231, sub-section (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, which gives the president powers to appoint a Justice of the Supreme Court acting on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council and subject to confirmation of the appointment of by the Senate."###
