Political Lucre Divides Suspended Council Chairmen…As Some Beg Amaechi For Mercy

Governor Amaechi two weeks ago, in disregard of rule of law, single-handedly suspended eleven elected Local Government Council chairmen, an action which attracted criticisms and condemnations across the state.

Instead of building on these condemnations of the governor's action to fight their cause, some of the suspended chairmen, because of spoils of office have gone cap-in-hand begging Governor Amaechi to bring them back to office.

The timid chairmen were said to have enlisted the services of traditional rulers and first class chiefs, asking them to go to Amaechi to beg on their behalves to tamper justice with mercy and they promptly harkened to the chairmen's appeals.

What a great irony that Amaechi who should be berated for trampling on the rule of law, was now being begged to tamper justice with mercy. Where was the justice when he sacked them?

The timidity of the suspended chairmen to fight their cause so much angered a Port Harcourt legal luminary, Bar Faye Dikio who in an interview with Beacon described elected officials as being subservient and lack the courage to challenge the governor when he tramples on their right.

The good news however, is that not all the suspended chairmen are subservient as some of them who threatened the Governor with court action over their suspension have made good their threats and have started talking with their lawyers in preparation for the court action.###
