We Will Take AFN To Next Level

I'm happy that an Olympian like Innocent Egbunike is now coach of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN). He has the experience, the knowledge and the expertise to move AFN forward. Therefore working with such a fellow is a good thing for me. You will agree with me that Nigerian sports have been on a nosedive trend for some years now, particularly in the international championships like the Common Wealth Games, Olympics, the All Africa Games and other major competitions in the sub-region.

So, there is need for us to go back to the drawing board and map out plans and ways of moving this federation forward. Our athletes, both track and field events must go back and reclaim their prime place in Africa and in the world sports?

These were the work of Elias Gora who was appointed the Technical Director of the Federation talking about his co-appointee, Innocent Egbunike as the head coach of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).

Gora solicited the support of the National Sports Commission saying without their support they will not achieve their purpose.

“We cannot do what we want to do without the support of the NSC and the athletes. So, to achieve good results in competitions, the athletes must show total commitment”

He therefore begged the NSC to give the AFN total support to achieve their set goals.###

Eguavoen To Become Enyimba's   Technical Adviser

The chairman of Enyimba International football club of Aba, Felix Anyansi Agwu has disclosed that the Super Eagles Coach, Augustine Eguavoen, will be the club's new technical adviser.

He disclosed to sports writers that hiring Eguavoen as the technical adviser was part of the restructuring exercise carried out on the club and the unveiling of the new adviser will take place at the Enyimba International Stadium Aba.

He explained that the restructuring of the club was part of revitalizing Nigerian football and taking it to the next level. “We are determined to change the face of Nigerian football and that, we are leaving no stone unturned. He added that aside the signing the former Eagles  defender, there were various things to be done to help better the club in the continental level.

He opined that Eguavoen had coached the club before, elevating it to a 3rd place in the league and also winning the federation cup.###

I Will Trim Down Sports, Says Bolaji

By Isobaye Allison

The chairman of National sports commission (NSC), Hon. Bolaji Abdullahi has vowed to trim down sports in the federation in order to cut down costs.

The minister disclosed this while defending the ministry's 2012 budget on the 31st January, stressing that the country's sports would develop if the ministry concentrates only on few sports. He maintained that the ministry will no longer continue to spend its meager resources on the multiple sports that make no impact.

Heaping the problems of Nigerian Sports on the shoulders of people at the helm of affair, he stressed that the administrators had concentrated so much on competition rather than building and developing sports.

Bolaji insisted that the problem of Nigeria Football Federation was more of political than legal.

“I think the problem of Nigerian sports could be attributed to this mentality on competition and winning instead of laying more emphasis on development.###
