Court Adjourns To Nov 4 In Case Against Stealing Suspect

A Port-Harcourt Magistrate Court has adjourned to November 4, 2019 a case against a stealing suspect, Mahamadu Isah, 19, charged with stealing three bags of crayfish from Mrs. Ruth Obiobare at Creek Road Market in Port-Harcourt City Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The suspect was granted bail by the presiding magistrate of the court, Senior Magistrate Lenu S. Baridam, on 7 August, 2019 and had adjourned the case to September 25 for hearing.

However, the suspect was not able to meet his bail conditions and was ordered remanded in custody.

The case came up on Monday, 14 October but the suspect was not in court.

First prosecuting witness in the case, Mrs. Ruth Obiobare, gave evidence in the case at an earlier sitting by the court.

 The second prosecuting witness will give evidence in the case on the adjourned date.

A one-count charge was preferred against the suspect who was first brought to court on Monday, 29 July.

The one-count charge read to the suspect said that his behaviour was contrary to Section 390 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 37, Vol II, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999.

The suspect had pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge read to him.

The accused allegedly stole three bags of crayfish from Mrs. Ruth Obiobare who was a trader at Creek Road Market and it was said that the three bags of crayfish cost the sum of one hundred and five thousand naira (N105,000.00).

The suspect was arraigned by the Rivers State Police Command before Senior Magistrate Lenu S. Baridam in case number PMC/1463C/2019 between Commissioner of Police and Mahamadu Isah.

The court granted bail to the accused in the sum of one hundred thousand naira (N100,000.00) and had asked surety in the case to sign an affidavit and submit two passport photographs and one valid Identity Card.

It had also ordered the prosecutor in the case, Inspector Ochogwu Wilberforce, to confirm that the address of the surety was genuine.
