Betta Chimaobim Edu is a Nigerian political figure and former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, who was suspended from her position on January 8, 2024.

Born on October 27, 1986, she is 37 years old. Edu has an impressive educational background, holding a Ph.D. in Public Health from Texila American University, an MSc in Public Health, and a PGD in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, UK.

Additionally, she earned her MBBS in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Calabar, Nigeria, in 2010.

In terms of professional experience, Edu began her career in 2011 as a House Officer at UCTH, Calabar, and later served as a Medical Officer at the State Ministry of Health in Cross River State in 2013.

Her political career took off when she was appointed Minister of Humanitarian Affairs & Poverty Alleviation in 2023. Before that, she held key positions such as the National Women Leader of the APC in 2022 and the Chairman of the Cross River State COVID-19 Taskforce in 2020.

She also served as the Chairman of the Nigeria Health Commissioners Forum in 2020 and held the position of Commissioner for Health in Cross River State from 2019 to 2022. In 2015, she was the Special Adviser on Community and Primary Healthcare to the Governor of Cross Rivers.

Edu has furthered her expertise by obtaining fellowships from reputable institutions such as the Royal School of Public Health and the African Institute of Public Health Professionals.
