Convinced of the devastating effects of the impending flood in some communities in the state, Rivers lawmakers have called on relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to take urgent steps to alleviate the sufferings of the people.
They made the call while deliberating on the preliminary report of the Adhoc Committee on Flood as presented on the floor of the House.
Presenting the report, the lawmaker representing Akuku – Toru constituency 2, Opuende Lolo Isaiah informed that the level of preparedness is in 3 stages, the pre flood stage, intervention stage and post flood stage.
On his part, the Speaker, Rt Hon.Martin Amaewhule, hinted that from available information the Cameroonian Authority may soon open up the Ladgo Dam, which may inflict more pains on communities along the coast line.
He urged the Committee, more particularly standing committees on Emergency Relief, Environment and Health to liaise with the appropriate MDAs to provide succour for the people and commended the Committee for their preliminary report.
It would be recalled that the adhoc committee had earlier met with council chairmen of the affected Local Government Areas and other stakeholders to ascertain their level of preparedness for the predicted flood.
