Group Calls For Return Of Handwriting To School Curriculum

Founder/International President of Handwriting Association of Nigeria and Diaspora, Rtn. Dr. Careg Wale has called on stakeholders in the educational sector to lend their voice in the advocacy for the return of handwriting as a main subject to the basic curriculum.

He made this known during the grand finale of the handwriting summit 2019 in Port Harcourt, saying that the menace of bad handwriting has contributed so much to the rate of failure in examination.

Dr. Wale said  one of the ways to contribute in impacting the educational sector is to ensure that there is the consciousness to decent written expression called handwriting.

According to him, the use of computer and smart phones has caused serious negative effects on the youths. He noted that it was smart phones that brought about the rapid use of abbreviations, which led students to carry it with them into the examination hall, making them to think that they are still writing to their friends out there.

The President of National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Rivers chapter, Dr. Roberta .T. Dosunwu who was also given an award at the event said that prior to this time, handwriting was a compulsory subject for all students, which made most of them to write well in their primary school days.

Dr. Dosunwu commended the handwriting Association for initiating the idea of re-introducing handwriting in schools, saying it is necessary for the children to know how to write well so that their work can be read and awarded the appropriate marks, as a way of averting the rate of failure in schools.

She said the issue of bad handwriting among students in schools should be a source of worry to both parents and teachers. She urged teachers to always give their students assignment on handwriting so as to improve on their writing skills.
