UNILAG Alumni Converge In Port Harcourt

…Honours Tony Momoh With Award Of Excellence In Journalism

The Rivers State branch of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, alumni association held an award ceremony on Sunday 30 January 2022 at the Hotel Presidential Port Harcourt.

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Channels Media Group, Dr. Tony Momoh was honoured and enrolled as a member of the Rivers State branch of the association. He tasked graduates of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, aka, The Akokites to initiate positive changes that will turn Nigeria around.

Dr. Tony Momoh who is the National President of UNILAG alumni association worldwide stated this shortly after receiving ‘award of excellence in Journalism’ bestowed on him by the Rivers State branch of the UNILAG alumni association.

The event which took place at the Banquet Hall of the Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt, on Sunday, 30th January, 2022, attracted distinguished personalities including the former Deputy Governor of the state, Engineer Tele Ikuru, who personally presented the award to Dr Momoh.

Dr. Tony Momoh had asked what the great Akokites could do to turn Nigeria around positively. Then he went on to say: ‘UNILAG comes first in all sectors. So, what can we do to turn Nigeria around positively? We must not wait for the change. Let us initiate the change. Akokites are men and women of special breeds’.

The world-wide President lauded the Rivers State branch of the UNILAG alumni association under the able leadership of Chief Dr MSD Bob-Manuel who went to great lengths to ensure that the media guru was physically present.

His words: ‘The chairman of the Rivers State branch of the association, Chief Dr. MSD Bob-Manuel made sure here today and I had to pull all the stops to ensure I am here due to the high esteem I hold the branch because the branch is very vibrant’.

He concluded by saying that Akokites should take the lead so as to make Nigeria the envy of the world.

The royal father of the day was Amanyanabo of Abonnema. HRM King Barr Disrael Gbobo Bob-Manuel, Ekineye Gbobo. Owukori IX while the chairman of the occasion was a distinguished alumni, Amaopusenibo Bobo Sofiri Brown.

The chairman of the occasion in his remarks recalled the golden years of Nigerian graduates when a university degree equated to honor but regretted that today University degree is an invitation to suffer.

Amaopusenibo Sofiri Bobo Brown thanked Nigerian governments to invest in excellence stressing that ‘Nigeria can still be a land of enjoyment if we celebrate excellence’.

He raised alarm at the number of people who delve into ‘terminal poverty’ each minute which adds to the staggering total of Two Million annually.

The guest speaker, Emeritus Prof Nimi Dimkpa Briggs, in his lecture titled, ‘Role of Alumni Associations In Ensuring An Organized And Prosperous Society’, tasked alumni associations to go beyond ‘bricks and mortar’ in their support to their Alma mater but to take the lead in societal growth through the persona, lifestyles of members.
