ASUP Club House For Capt. Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Rumuola Commissioned Amid Cheers

For the staff of Capt. Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Rumuola, Port Harcourt, it’s no longer going to be all work and no play that proverbially makes ‘Jack’ a dull boy with the commissioning of ASUP Club House on Friday February 11, 2022.

Built by the Academic Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Capt. Elechi Amadi Polytechnic Chapter, under the leadership of Dr Moses T. Bakpo, the edifice was started in 2019 and delivered by the incumbent ASUP administration of the institution.

While handing over the Club House named ‘Legacy House’ to the institution, the ASUP Chairman, Dr Bakpo said the idea of building a relaxation centre in the polytechnic came as a result of the yearnings and aspirations of their members to have a befitting staff club where they can sit, eat and relax during their leisure hours as promised during their electioneering campaign in 2018.

He also noted that the gesture was to contribute their own quota as stakeholders to the infrastructural development of the polytechnic that is their sole benefactor, in the spirit of giving back to society.

Pontificating that the Club House will enhance the capacity of the staff to perform their duties maximally, the ASUP Chairman, expressed gratitude to the Rector of the institution, Dr (Barr) Sam Kalagbor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Sen. Lee Maeba for approving the land for the project, providing financial assistance and encouragement which boosted the efforts and financial commitment of the institution’s ASUP members to be able to start and complete the edifice.

Also deserving of special commendation, Dr. Bakpo added, is Dr Mrs Edith Herbert for donating one horse power air conditioner as a personal support for the project.

Dr. Bakpo also noted that the reason for building the Club House would be hardly realized without the required facilities. He therefore appealed to all and sundry for assistance in furnishing the Legacy House.

In his address, the Chairman of Governing Council of Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Sen. Lee Maeba commended the foresight and courage of the Dr Bakpo-led ASUP for embarking on the project. He lauded the union the more for using the resources provided by the institution’s works department rather than contracting the project out to outsiders in constructing the Club House, stressing that the institution as technologically driven, has all it takes including human resources to handle any project.

The Council Chairman promised the union the sum of N2million to enable them complete the internal works within the Legacy House.

The elated Rector of the polytechnic and facilitator of the project, Dr (Barr) Sam Kalagbor praised the ASUP leadership of the institution for redefining what unionism is all about in the institution as well as raising the bar of leadership to an enviable height.

Dr. Kalagbor prayed that subsequent ASUP unions in the polytechnic will toe the same path as the present ASUP administration in the institution.

He noted the need to fence the Club House to clearly demarcate it from other structures for academic activities even as he hopes to meet with the ASUP leadership over the building close to the Club House on whether to convert it to a more useful purpose for the club or do away with it.
