In line with the law passed by Rivers State House of Assembly on teaching of indigenous languages in Government owned schools in the state, Rivers State Government has commenced moves to ensure that teaching of indigenous languages in public schools takes effect from next academic session.
This followed the inauguration of a technical committee on modalities for the teaching of indigenous languages in public schools in the state by the Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Professor Kaniye Ebeku.
Inaugurating the committee, Prof. Ebeku had charged them to consider ways of implementing the teaching of local languages in public schools.
He said the Committee is expected to come up with modalities as well as how many languages to be taught per school while recommending how competent teachers are to be recruited and trained for effective service delivery.
The committee members made up of 5 directors of the Ministry of Education and two linguists to serve as external advisers are expected to submit reports of the commitee in two weeks.
It would be recalled that Rivers legislators in November 2019 resolved that the House Committee on Education should investigate why teaching of Indigenous Languages Law 2003 assented to in 2005 was not being implemented.
