World Teachers’ Day: Teachers Described As Major Pillars Of Sound, Progressive Society

Teachers have being described as one of the major pillars of a sound and progressive society.

This being part of the statement of Her Excellency, Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom Wike to commemorate this year’s World Teachers’ Day.

She noted that teachers have demonstrated their importance by bearing the weight and crucial responsibilities of inculcating knowledge, kindling inspiration and encouraging creative minds for greatness.

Affirming that teaching is a profession that teaches all other professions, she regretted that

teaching is most times seen as a last option or escape route whenever one cannot find a good paying job due to harsh economic challenges, thereby, having an influx of people coming into the workforce of the teaching career, without the required qualification, passion and commitment.

She stressed the need to sensitize Governmental and Non Governmental organizations in academia, private sector and also experts in the field of teaching, to advocate for firm and concrete policies that would insist on fair and proper screening of teachers before employment, as well as regular empowering and re-training of teachers for effectiveness and efficiency in the teaching profession.

Wishing every teacher well, Justice Nyesom Wike observed that the fundamental right to education is recognized as a pathway to greatness, which cannot be fulfilled without the existence of quality teachers with the zeal of expanding students’ desires to learn and succeed.

World Teachers Day is celebrated every 5th of October to show appreciation to teachers all over the world and to also assess the unique issues that directly affect teachers and how to help them improve.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “The Right To Education means The Right To A Qualified Teacher”.
