Court Grants El-Zakzaky And Wife Leave To Seek Medical Treatment Abroad

Justice Darius Kobo of Kaduna State High Court II on Monday morning granted Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife Zeenat leave to seek medical treatment in a hospital in India with strict condition that they must travel under the supervision of State officials.

Dari Bayero, the prosecuting counsel, later told newsmen that no time frame was given for the travel, “however, we shall review the court ruling for possible appeal within stipulated time.”

Marshal Abubakar, counsel to El-Zakzaky, who stood in for lead counsel Femi Falana SAN, explained that the ruling is on his “application to seek medical leave and not bail application as erroneously being reported in some sections of the media.”

El-Zakzaky, leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), and his wife have been in detention since December 2015 following an altercation between some IMN members and Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, close to IMN headquarters in Zaria, Kaduna State.

The Shi’ite leader, whose previous bails were ignored by the Nigerian Government, returned to court once more following alleged deterioration of his health and that of his wife.
