…As Police Detain Married Man Found With Family Planning Drug

Some Officers of  Diobu Divisional Police Headquarters in Mile 1, Port Harcourt local Government area of Rivers State have  detained a married man simply identified as Mr. Friday, for being in possession of Postinor 2, an emergency contraceptive drug, we have learnt.

It was revealed that Friday was arrested by the  Officers last Wednesday during a stop and search operation in the front of Isaac Boro Park in Port Harcourt.

 The man who is a member of Goat Meat Sellers Association, Bishop Okoye Mile 3 Branch was on his way to market to purchase items for business for the next day when he was arrested despite the fact that Postinor 2, the drug found on him is not a controlled drug.

We gathered that the Officers reportedly accused the man of using it for abortion of babies thereby committing murder. A source at the station who did not want his name to be mentioned alleged that the Officers  were asking the man to list the names of ladies he had given the drugs to carry out abortion.

Our source further alleged that the officers insisted that the man should part with some money found in his possession before he could be released.

 The source explained that a relative of the detained man called the attention of a senior Police Officer in the station to the issue who ordered for the goat meat seller’s release after he asserted that the drug to the best of his knowledge is not a contraband product.

The Vice Chairman of Goat Meat Sellers Association, Nelson Tasie confirmed the incident to this medium, adding that he was also at the station at the time of the incident.

Meanwhile another married man in a chat with this publication revealed that he was arrested and detained by the same officers after they found Viagra, a sex enhancing drug on him. He said he was taken to the station and allegedly paid some money for bail despite his insistence that the drug in his possession is not a controlled drug.

This tabloid in the past days has received so many reports of arrest of people found with Viagra and Postinor 2 by officers attached to the same station.

A former representative of Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) in Rivers State Ministry of Health,  Pharmacist Martins Idanwojo, who was recently redeployed to Minna, Niger State in a telephone chat with National Network stated that Viagra and Postinor 2 are not controlled drugs neither are they are addict drugs.

He revealed that Viagra is a sex enhancing drug while Postinor 2 is emergency contraceptive drug and they are not prohibited drugs. He stated the Police were wrong to have arrested persons in possession of such drugs.

PCN is a Federal Government parastatal established by act 91 of 1992(Cap P17 2004) charged with responsibility for regulating and controlling pharmacy education practice and training in all aspects and ramifications. 

On his part Pharmacists Abubakar Dankara , a member of  National Institute For Pharmaceutical Research and Development(NIPRD) confirmed to us that both drugs are not under Dangerous  Drug Act (DDA).

The spokesperson of Rivers State Police command Omoni Nnamdi did not respond to text messages sent to him on the incident.
